🩺 Marie Bashir
Marie Bashir was born in Narrandera in 1930 and grew up there before further schooling and medical study in Sydney. Her work in psychiatry included a strong concern for children, young people and communities facing disadvantage. In 2001 she became the first woman appointed Governor of New South Wales, serving until 2014. Narrandera retained a special place in the public recognition of her career, and the council paid tribute to her local beginnings after her death in January 2026. Her medical experience remained an important influence on a public role associated with approachable service.
📚 Patrick Hartigan, “John O’Brien”
Patrick Hartigan served as Narrandera’s parish priest from 1917 to 1944 while writing under the name John O’Brien. His collection Around the Boree Log, published in 1921, found an audience for poems about rural Catholic communities, their worries, humour and familiar voices. The verses travelled through books and public recitation, with several editions appearing within a few years. Narrandera was a sustained working home in that literary career. Hartigan also drew on experience as a parish priest in other rural communities, observing voices and situations that found their way into his verse.
🎾 Evonne Goolagong Cawley
Evonne Goolagong Cawley grew up at Barellan, where improvised childhood tennis and support from the local community helped develop an exceptional talent. The Wiradjuri player went on to win Wimbledon in 1971 and again in 1980, alongside other major titles and Australian team success. Her later work encouraged sporting opportunities for Indigenous children. Barellan is the specific town in this shire connection, distinct from Narrandera itself. Her internationally celebrated court craft grew from a country childhood in which a homemade paddle could stand in for a tennis racket.
